MASARU YOSHIDA, President of GIGE

Profile

At the summit of Kalalpathar, May 2006

Masaru YOSHIDA was born in December 1937 in Tokyo, with his father Akira Yoshida and mother Sumi Inoue. He graduated from Hokkaido University (Department of Geology and Mineralogy, and the Hokkaido University Mountaineering Club).

In 1968-1970, he stayed over a year in Antarctica as a member of the Japanese team, and since then, he concentrated in research of Antarctica, including the report of the first discovery of Yamato meteorites in the world. He worked as a teaching staff of the Osaka City University from October 1970 to March 2001 when he retired from the university. Since 1985, he has been engaged in the international scientific activity related to the Gondwanaland research, which had been very rare as a Japanese geoscientist, and escorted several Japanese scientists to Gondwanaland studies. As a Japanese he first received the Ananda Coomalaswami Medal of Sri Lankan Geological Society (1996), and was nominated as the Emeritus Guest Professor of the Institute of Fundamental Studies of the same country. He inaugurated with his colleagues the Gondwana Research Group (in 1993) and the International Association for Gondwana Research (in 1997), as well as the international geoscience journal Gondwana Research , and worked several years as the chief editor of Gondwana News Letter and 5 years as the chief co-editor of Gondwana Research, and encouraged Gondwanaland researches especially in Gondwanan countries. He published over 30 books and special issues of journals, over 200 scientific reports including original articles, survey reports and short reports, 270 presentations at symposiums, and 95 miscellaneous. reports and notes. Recent publications are fully referable elsewhere in the GIGE web page.

Presently, he is serving as the President of the Gondwana Institute for Geology and Environment, President of the Gondwana Research Group and the Emeritus President of the International Association for Gondwana Research. Very recently in 2010 he has been nominated as the first Japanese the Emeritus Professor of the Tribhuvan University of Nepal.

Roots

Masaru Yoshida is the 10th generation of the Yoshidas, which originated from Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The first generation is Chuzaemon Yoshida (-1729) who was the Samurai of the Obama-han. This man is sometimes said to be the person who joined the AKAHO-SHIJU SHICHI-SHI of CHUSHIN-GURA (Seventy Nine Samurais); but this is very suspicious. Sixth Johmyo Yoshida (1822-1904) was a director of Ohmi Province in Shiga Prefecture, and seventh Jotoku Yoshida (1855-1927) was a mayor of Unpin-mura, the precursor of Obama City.
